December 20: NJ American Water is aware of taste and odor issues and will continue flushing the water system. We are anticipating 1 to 2 inches of snow tonight into Saturday morning. Black ice is possible. Residents have 12 daylight hours to clear snow from sidewalks once the precipitation has ended.

Sewer sale

The Borough sold the wastewater system to New Jersey American Water (NJAW) in 2023.

About the sewer bill

  • September 1, 2023 was the last day for online payments to the Borough.
  • The final sewer utility bill from the Borough covered the service period from July 1 through September 30, 2023.
  • Starting in October 2023, New Jersey American Water will include water and wastewater services in one bill, per Block and Lot.
  • If you are a landlord or tenant, please review the NJAW letter for more information.
  • Starting on October 1, please contact New Jersey American Water to pay your sewer bill.

About the referendum process

  • August 1, 2022: Borough Council approved the potential sale of the wastewater system
  • June 17, 2022: NJAW presented a bid proposal
  • September 20 and 29, 202: Somerville residents attended Town Hall meetings to learn more about the potential sale and make an informed vote
  • November 8, 2022: A local referendum question was placed on the ballot and voters approved the $7 million sale to NJ American Water
  • March 6, 2023: Borough Council granted permission to NJ American Water to provide wastewater collection services in Somerville
