NJAW water main construction

New Jersey American Water is installing 3,200 feet of new 30-inch water transmission main and replacing 2,200 feet of aging 10 and 12-inch pipes in Somerville. This project will help strengthen the system and mitigate potential breaks.

Work locations

• Veterans Memorial Drive West (from South Davenport Street to Somerset Street)
• Mountain Avenue (from Somerset Street to West Cliff Street/Altamont Place)
• Somerset Street (from Route 206 to Mountain Avenue)

Work schedule

March to July 2025

• Work dates: Monday to Friday (March 10 to end of July)
• Work hours: 7 am to 4 pm
• Some night work on county roads (dates to be announced)

Monday, May 26: Construction will not interfere with the annual Tour of Somerville bike race. Work within the route of the race will stop and the roadway will be paved 2-3 weeks ahead of the race. Work will resume the following week.

Fall 2025

Final street restorations (paving) will start 90 days after the installation work is completed.

Traffic plan

• At least 1 lane of traffic should remain open during construction on Veterans Memorial Drive West, Mountain Avenue, and Somerset Street
• NJAW will advise if/when detours are necessary due to road closures.
• Expect alternating traffic patterns during work hours
• Emergency vehicles and local traffic will be allowed access during construction
