WHEREAS, during Black History Month, we celebrate the many achievements and vast contributions of African Americans to our economic, spiritual, political and cultural development of both our nation and our community; and
WHEREAS, the 2023 theme is “The Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity” and explores the rich tapestry and complexity of the African American life and its meaning through history; and
WHEREAS, the observance of Black History Month reminds us of the continued need to mitigate racism and to build a harmonious community; and
WHEREAS, Borough of Somerville continues to work toward becoming a more inclusive community wherein all people are respected and recognized for their contributions and potential contributions to our community, state, country and world; and
WHEREAS, Borough of Somerville is proud to honor the history and contributions of African Americans in our community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, that we, the Mayor and the Borough of Somerville Council, do hereby recognize February as Black History Month.
BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED, that we, the Mayor and the Borough of Somerville Council urge all residents to recognize the contributions made by members of the African American community and to actively promote the principles of equality and liberty.
