On August 1, 2022, TFE Properties met with the Borough Council to update them about the environmental remediation taking place at the former Baker and Taylor warehouse site on Kirby Avenue.
Before the warehouse building is demolished, certain steps have to be taken to ensure the health and safety of workers at the site and of residents in the immediate area. Council was advised the asbestos has already been removed under the oversight of a DEP-licensed Site Remediation Professional (LSRP). Other items and non-hazardous materials have also been removed from the building.
A site investigation found that a number of soil areas contained PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyl) above the minimum level considered safe by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the NJ Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). The property owner will remove these contaminated soils from the site under rules established by both the EPA and DEP.
