Somerville Mayor Dennis Sullivan, who retired from Somerville Public Schools in 2008 after a 35-year career, celebrates the week of May 3-7 with the following remarks:
“Teachers play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our community, the nation, and the world. From the preschool teacher covered with fingerpaint to the college professor training the next generation of scientists, dedicated men and women labor tirelessly in classrooms throughout the land to educate our children. Teaching is a demanding job under normal conditions, but the ongoing pandemic has forced educators to become even more creative, flexible, and resilient as they deal with the youngsters entrusted to them. For their ongoing efforts to remain positive role models and beacons of stability in an everchanging world, I salute them.
Most of us have fond memories of a particular teacher, coach, or advisor that played an important role in our school experience. This would be a good time to reflect on that memory, and to reach out to someone you know today in education to say thank you. Our children, the future leaders we need so desperately, are in good hands, and I hope you will join me in saluting their teachers not just this week, but every day of the year.”
