April 28, 2020, Governor Murphy signed Executive Order 130 allowing "any governing body of a municipality with a calendar year budget cycle may adopt a resolution instituting a grace period concluding on a date no later than June 1, 2020 for the payment of second quarter property taxes."
Councilman Granville Brady stated "the Borough Council will be voting on Resolution 20-0504-126, authorizing the extension of the grace period for property taxes and special improvement district taxes". He stated "I wanted to proceed with this action previously and we were advised we could not, so I am glad the Governor signed the Executive Order enabling us to do so".
Mayor Sullivan stated "during these unprecedented times, taxpayers are hurting and any relief is greatly appreciated". Property Taxpayers in Somerville Borough will be provided an extension of the grace period until June 1, 2010. Taxpayers are urged to pay prior to the date in order to ensure that interest and penalties do not accrue.
The Borough Council is expected to unanimously adopt the resolution extending property and special improvement district taxes until June 1, 2020 as required by Executive Order 130 on May 4, 2020. The Borough Council previously extended the grace period on April 20, 2020 for sewer taxes only to July 1, 2020.
