5/18/2012 - Division Street Ribbon Cutting Ceremony- Friday, May 18, 2012 6:00pm

Please join Mayor Gallagher as he officially reopens Division Street after the street reconstruction.

A reception for all will follow with live music at the pop-up gallery located at 59 Main.

In two months Division Street has changed from a drab, narrow side walked street to an open, bright and pedestrian space.

In March the Borough started work on the rebuilding of Division Street to make it more pedestrian friendly and improve the traffic circulation of downtown Somerville.

The result is a wide inviting street that has no curbs, but a continuous surface from storefront to storefront. Constructed of colored concrete this street is unique in New Jersey, using stamps the contractor placed impressions of slate for the pedestrian walking surface and a stippled impression for the center portion of the street.

Additionally, a hardening agent was added to the surface to highlight the color of the concrete, on top of this a sealing agent has been applied to assist the cleaning of the street and as a side benefit this too brings out the color of the concrete.

Combined these treatments offer a visually appealing view for all who see it.

Due to these multiple treatments, the concrete will take longer to reach full weight bearing strength, to allow this to happen, we anticipate the street will be closed to vehicles for up to 60 days from the completion of the project.
