All are welcome to enjoy the new inclusive playground at Walck Park on Walnut Street! The project was partially funded by a $70,000 NJ Department of Community Affairs Local Recreational Improvement Grant. We matched the grant with $57,000 from the Somerville Recreation Trust Fund. The trust fund includes proceeds from the annual Somerville 5K Turkey Trot.

About the playground

The inclusive playground annex connects to the existing playground at Walck Park. “Kids and families of all abilities are welcome to learn, play and grow together,” said Recreation Director Kathy Gerndt. “This playground was designed to enable children of all abilities to develop physically, cognitively, socially, and emotionally.”

The playground features a poured-in rubber surface and calm colored components that are designed to create a sense of serenity.

What’s next

The Borough was recently awarded a $150,000 Community Development Block Grant for a similar inclusive playground at Carol Pager Park on Green Street. We are currently in the planning phase of this project.
