December 20: NJ American Water is aware of taste and odor issues and will continue flushing the water system. We are anticipating 1 to 2 inches of snow tonight into Saturday morning. Black ice is possible. Residents have 12 daylight hours to clear snow from sidewalks once the precipitation has ended.

Gina Stravic

3-year term: January 3, 2023 to December 31, 2025

Gina Stravic was appointed to the  Borough Council in 2022 to fill a vacancy and elected to a 3-year term in 2023.

For the past 16 years, Gina was a member of the Environmental Commission and served most recently as chair. The Commission addresses environmental issues in our community and obtained bronze-level status in the state’s Sustainable Jersey municipal program.

Gina graduated from Red Bank Regional High School and from Springfield College with a degree in Recreation Administration. She relocated to Somerville after her marriage to Dan Swass in 1983. Dan and Gina are the proud parents of Thomas, John, and James Swass who all graduated from Somerville High School and now maintain professional careers.

Gina has over 35 years of management experience and is currently Executive Director of the Raritan Valley YMCA in East Brunswick. She embraces the core values of the YMCA: honesty, caring, respect and responsibility.

As a community volunteer, Gina is a member of the Somerville Rescue Squad Auxiliary and the American Legion Star Post 127. She holds lifetime membership status with Girl Scouts of the USA, served for 30 years as a troop leader in Somerville, and now volunteers as the outdoor consultant for the Somerville Girl Scouts. She also served as a soccer and basketball coach for Somerville Recreation for 17 years and was a member of the Somerville Recreation Commission for 5 years.

As a councilmember, Gina is chair of the Admin/Personnel Committee and vice-chair of the Public Property Committee. She is the council liaison for the Raritan River Greenway, Code Enforcement, Caring for Our Own, and the Environmental Commission.
