Community policing
Since the early 1990s, the Somerville Police Department's Community Policing Unit (CPU) has partnered with the community and created a line of communication to form a safe and secure environment.
School programs
D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) is a collaborative program in which local law enforcement and schools join together to educate students about the personal and social consequences of substance abuse, bullying, and violence.
National Night Out
National Night Out promotes police-community partnerships to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live. This event, held on the first Tuesday in August at Carol Pager Park, features free music, food and entertainment.
Somerville Police Youth Academy
The Somerville Police Youth Academy is offered to students (grades 6-8) at Vanderveer Elementary, Somerville Middle School, and Immaculate Conception School. During the one-week program, students will:
- Tour Police Headquarters, Somerset County Prosecutors Office, and the Somerset County Jail
- Experience a Sheriffs K-9 demonstration
- Learn about other emergency services in the Borough
- Participate in team-building activities
The academy is offered at no cost. Maximum capacity of 25 cadets per class.
